Fruit Fly Strategy

Overview

Nayem, can you provide a couple of paragraphs explaining the both Russell IPM’s & Russell Bio Solutions Fruit Fly strategy.

Fruit flies cause both direct and indirect damage to horticulture crops worldwide. The pest presence creates trade barriers due to quarantine restrictions and fruit interceptions in the EU. There are also a number of socio-economic implications to consider, such
as food security, loss of jobs, income and employment. Pesticide treatments to fruit fly infestations leave residues in fresh produce, affecting human health. Russell Bio Solutions provides new, biorational products that can be used to
create and inform integrated pest management programmes.

The system 3 part system developed by Russell IPM & Russell Bio Solutions considers both male and female species, more information is provided below.

on the 9th June 2020, Dr Nayem Hassan provided a presentation, explaining the hard work that has been completed by Russell IPM & Russell Bio Solutions on Fruit Fly in Asia & Africa.

The three part attract & kill system from Russell Bio Solutions

The Attract & Kill system is based upon a combination of attractant and insecticide to lure, immobilise and kill the target pest upon contact. The system is more cost-effective than mass-trapping as only one application is required for the whole cropping season and servicing is unnecessary. Application of our Attract & Kill systems has been proven to reduce fruit fly infestations substantially. Up to 97% fruit protection can be achieved when our systems are used for the management of fruit fly.

Cuetrac male

Cuetrac Male has a specially designed formula to manage male fruit fly species that respond to Cuelure. The wax emulsion contains male lure with very low dose toxicant to kill on contact. It is advised to apply Cuetrac Male along the border of the treatment plot.

Cuetrac female

Cuetrac Female is exclusively formulated to lure female Bactrocera fruit flies. The bait station contains a low dose toxicant with female lure.

Recharge Pupae & larvae

Recharge contains natural beneficial micro-fauna that improves soil health and stimulates the immune system of the plant to fight against fruit flies. In the presence of Recharge, the adult fruit flies will fail to emerge, as the beneficial microorganisms suppress fruit fly pupation occurring in the soil. Apply two to three kilograms of Recharge powder per hectare, near the root area of the tree, or mix with the irrigation system for application during watering.

Trials studying the efficacy of Ceranock in two sites revealed that in treated areas less than 5% of fruit was infested compared to untreated areas, where over a third of apricots were infested with fruit fly. The study demonstrates how Ceranock can protect fruit from infestation without the need for pesticide spraying.

Ceratitis capitata, Mediterranean Fruit Fly

Ceranock male

Ceranock Male has a specially designed formula to manage male fruit fly species that respond to Trimedilure. The wax emulsion contains male lure with a very low toxicant dose to kill on contact. It is advised to apply Ceranock Male along the border of the treatment plot.

Ceranock female

Ceranock Female is exclusively formulated to lure female Mediterranean fruit flies. The bait station contains a female attractant and a low dose of toxicant.

Zonatrac male

Zonatrac Male has a specially designed formula to manage male fruit fly species that respond to Methyl Eugenol. The wax emulsion contains male lure with a low-dose toxicant to kill on contact. It is advised to apply Zonatrac Male along the border of the treatment plot.

Zonatrac female

Zonatrac Female is exclusively formulated to lure female Bactrocera fruit flies. The bait station contains a low dose toxicant with female lure.

Monitoring the results

Monitoring fruit fly presence is extremely important for control systems. Early detection allows growers to quickly deal with sudden increases in pest number and can help inform integrated pest management programmes and IPM programmes.

The Flycatcher

The Flycatcher is part of a specially de- signed monitoring system for multiple fruit fly spe- cies. The trap is made of a durable, translucent top and bright yellow base with a green cage attached to the upper part. It is reusable and can last sev- eral seasons. The trap is well suited for use in the trapping of fruit flies in dusty areas. Solid and liquid lures can be used with Flycatcher.

The Tephri Trap

The Tephri Trap is a compact and easy to assemble fruit fly monitoring device in a robust and weather proof polystyrene material. The trap is made in white and yellow to reduce non-target insect attraction. It is suitable for monitoring all species of fruit fly.

The Delta Trap

The Delta Trap’s red colour is especially attractive to fruit flies. Its shape serves a dual purpose: it shields the pheromone lure inside from debris and mimics a wind tunnel, allowing for steady pheromone dispersal.

Pheromone Lures by Russell IPM

Monitoring the males of fruit fly species is paramount, as they emerge before the females. Controlling the number of males present within a population can disrupt reproductive behaviours an can ensure the successful prevention of fruit fly infestations. The lures can be used with either the Flycatcher or Delta trap.
